How to use this calculator
Contributions arrive at month-end and begin earning returns in the following month. The rate is nominal and compounds monthly.
The model uses a constant, nonnegative return. Fees, tax and inflation are excluded. Real market returns fluctuate and can be negative; the projection is not a guaranteed outcome.
The formula
FV = P(1 + r)^n + C[(1 + r)^n − 1] ÷ r. Here r = annual rate ÷ 1200 and n = years × 12. At 0%: FV = P + Cn.
A worked example
Starting with 1,000 and saving 100 each month for 10 years at a nominal annual return of 5% gives about 17,175.24. Your contributions total 13,000.
